With a cry from its commander to “light this fire one more time,” the last shuttle — Atlantis — thundered into orbit Friday, July 8, 2011 on a cargo run that will close out three decades of NASA’s shuttle and usher in a period of uncertainty for America’s space program. It was the 135th shuttle flight since the inaugural mission in 1981.
Every so often an assignment occurs that will stick with a journalist forever. The story we worked on previewing a visit of the Liberty Belle, a World War II B-17 bomber, was one of those assignments for me.
